| Having meet at a party in the summer of 1991, piper
and ruth began playing together in the privacy of Ruth's home. Writing
and singing together, they had no intention of performing until a friend
of a friend, Johnny Irion, invited them to open for his band, Queen
Sarah Saturday, at the rock venue, Under The Street. Under pressure
to come up with something to call the duo, Ruth quickly came up with
the one name that they each, being the youngest in their respective
families, had been referred to all
of their lives, "kid sister".
After that performance, they recorded a five song demo tape. Out of
two hundred tapes, 120 were sold at their next performance. Only 10
were ever actually used for booking. This self titled recording was
later distributed internationally through Ladyslipper Inc.
Keeping their day jobs, they continued to perform locally and ocassionally
ventured outside the area and then in 1994, still working full time
jobs, the duo began to perform more often, traveling more outside of
the state. The song Dashboard Buddha was born out of working 40 to 50
hour work weeks while still performing.
In 1995, through outside financial and emotional encouragement, they
recorded their first CD, Broken Bridges. Producer Arlen Custer at Reel
to Real Studio in Raleigh helped to release the cd in the summer of
1995.
Fellow singer-songwriter,Shawn Mullins, encouraged them to tour more
and was generous with his knowledge of both the road and venues. Ruth
quit her job in 1997 and Shawn agreed to produce their next album.
Ruth booked the band on a national tour for the beginning of 1998. They
returned home for a few days and then headed to Atlanta to begin recording
at Orphan Studio. There, Shawn Mullins produced and Glen Matullo engineered
kid sister's second CD, dashboard buddha.
Soon after the release of the CD, Shawn Mullins was signed by Columbia
Records and in 1999 was nominated for a grammy for his single "Rockabye".
Glen Matullo has since worked on several projects, most recently for
Collective Soul and Amy Ray (Indigo Girls) .
Ruth and Piper have continued to tour nationally since 1998 and have
released their 3rd CD, A One Night Stand By Request, which is a live
performance recording.
